“I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.
I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.” (Lamentations 3:19-20)
As Jeremiah penned these words in Lamentations, he spoke of the sorrow within himself and the nation of Israel, due to their wanderings and separation from God. Their devastation was a result of their own efforts. They did what was right in their own eyes, not God’s desire for them.
Lamentations is not frequently read by modern day readers due to the hardship and affliction that is talked about throughout the book. Who wants to listen to that negative stuff anyway? Ah, but just listen to the next few verses:
“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” (Lamentations 3:22-24)
It is God who gives us hope. Our own efforts do not give us true hope.
It is God’s great love that keeps us from our devastation.
It is God’s great kindness that is always present in our lives.
It is God’s love and kindness that are with us every day.
There is nothing greater than God’s faithfulness to each one of us.
He is always there, even when we turn our backs on him.
All of our hardship and affliction is pretty pale compared to the immense love, kindness and faithfulness that God has extended to each one of us. What greater encouragement can we have than the faithfulness of God?
Father, thank you for your faithfulness towards your people. Thank you for your faithfulness towards me. Amidst my shortcomings, you love me and are kind to me. You are faithful in every conceivable way. Great is your faithfulness!
