“Has He not made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part?” (2 Samuel 23:5b)
The above verse is part of David’s final words and prayers just before he died. Even in his life that had its share of imperfections, David was a man after God’s own heart. David knew of and stood firm on the knowledge of his relationship with God and the covenant that God made with his people. Consider the following:
Notice the divine origin of the covenant. It is God who has made the covenant with us. We did not initiate it. It was God who extended His boundless love and grace to each and every one of us. It is a unilateral covenant from God (the King of Kings, the Almighty, the Everlasting, the All-sufficient) to us. Not us to Him.
Notice the object of the covenant. It is directed to you, me, and each one of us. God directed that covenant to each of us personally. Not that any of us actually deserve being the recipient of that love and grace, but He is giving it freely even though none of us deserve it. He has extended His love and grace to the entire world for you!
Notice the duration of the covenant. Everlasting. Refresh your memory on this a little, that means it has no beginning and no end. It has always been and always will be. What greater hope and assurance do we have than that? With all of the uncertainties of this life and the temporary nature of all things, this is truly the one thing that we can all hang our hat on, forever.
Father God, thank you for extending Your boundless love and grace to each and every one of us without qualification forever. May I stand on the firm foundation of my relationship with You and the promise you have extended to me.
“I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered.” (Psalm 89:34)
